So … I’ve been playing my Floetry in the background for the past week almost, as an anthem of mourning since I found out that Natalie Stewart is no longer part of Floetry and they decided to part ways.
If you’re up on your music gossip you would be aware that Natalie isn’t a part of the Floetry Remixed Tour taking place at the moment, and when I read the news my first thoughts were ''Say its not sooooo …''.
All of a sudden the music I considered to be ‘current’ has turned into an overnight ‘classic’ because of the duo’s split over unknown reasons. Floetic is a not-so-oldie (2005) but goodie, and is so deserving of the praise that’s been issued from music media, as a homage to the British lovelies, I’ve taken it upon myself to do a music review on one of my favorite albums ‘Floetic’.
**Additional Information**
Now I typed my review and a part of me is really glad I didn’t publish it immediately. Read the review below, but there’s some updated information and audio at the bottom that will make us Floetry fans smile again. Yes!.
MUSIC REVIEW – FLOETRY’s FLOETIC ALBUM
Singing songstress Marsha Ambrosius and spoken-word floacist Natalie Stewart have concocted a smooth, sultry, and soulful album with the help of producers Darren ‘Limitless’ Henson, Keith ‘Keshon’ Pelzer, Vidal Davis, Ivan ‘Orthodox’ Barias, and Andre ‘Dirty’ Harris, whose combined credentials include Bilal and Jill Scott. The album includes some faster hip-hop tracks such as ‘Opera’ but it tends toward mellow grooves and slow jams with a warm, after-dark chilled out feel.
The music is classy and sleek, not grating or abrasive, and Natalie even says to "turn the music down" during ‘Headache’. The duo may sing about bringing the vibe "from SC5 to Philly's Westside" in ‘Floetic’, but they also pull on alot of personal heartache with sample lyrics of "I cry oceans" (‘Headache’) and "so much pain and misery" (‘If I Were a Bird’), and even ‘Fun’ is hooked around the phrase "this isn't my idea of fun."
Marsha and Natalie have both excelled with their respective vocal techniques, but their main strength is the interplay between their two voices. This interplay, like the album in general is a good demonstration of how contrasting, yet complimentary styles can be brought together to form an appealing whole.
This CD includes two bonus tracks: the demo version of ‘Butterflies’ - which was a hit when performed by Michael Jackson and a collabo with Sebastian Rogers on ‘Now You're Gone'.
**UPDATE**
Now that you have my review of the album. It's time for the update, this Friday Natalie Stewart hit the sound studio of the Wendy Williams radio show and gave her take on the Floetry drama.
It seems the ladies have decided to put aside their differences and Natalie will be doing her best to rejoin the Floetry Remixed Tour as soon as possible and give their fans what they are looking for – the intoxicating combination of the songstress and the floacist! .. a week after news was issued about the breakup, we have come full circle and it looks like the ‘supastars’ are back on track.
Enjoy the audio of what happened and how things have been restored (a few transcripts of which have been given below).
On her friendship with Marshia:
Natalie: Marsha and I met when we were like eleven years old, she’s more like my sister. The relationship thing sounds good and everything and I understand why everyone would want it to be, because a lot of people make love to our music. So of course everyone is going to feel as though there must be some chemistry…
About Rumors:
Natalie: The whole disappearance thing… I wasn’t well. I was spiritually, emotionally, physically.. I wasn’t well and I went back to London. I’ve only been back here for a month [U.S.]..
Wendy: What happened?
Natalie: I needed to sit still for a second. You know it’s a lot of stuff to get back in the business. I had to go home and just chill for a second. I’ve been back for like four weeks and I have new management.
About the Tour:
Natalie: Floetry is Natalie Stewart, Marsha and the fans.
Wendy: Now what is Floetry?
Natalie: Right now they are doing something remixed and I apologize to the fans for believing they were coming out to see Floetry and they didn’t get that. Right now I’m doing everything in my power to get back on that tour.
Wendy: [talking about the remix tour] People were screaming out to ya girl on the stage, saying “Where’s Natalie, Where’s Natalie” and Marsha was like I don’t know.
Natalie: I would just say a management call, a not too wise management call had put that situation together…. The name Floetry should have never been used, it should have been called another group…
